A restricted-performance message can turn an ordinary journey into a worrying one. The car may feel short of power, and a search online quickly produces a long list of possible repairs.
The message alone does not tell you which part has failed or what the bill will be. Before agreeing to work, get the warning assessed and separate what the garage has confirmed from what still needs investigating. If you would prefer to move the car on, we can value it with the fault present.
What does restricted performance mean on a Jaguar?
Treat it as a warning about the car's operation, rather than a diagnosis of one component. For example, the 2012 Jaguar XK handbook associates the message with possible loss of power or driveability and calls for qualified assistance. That handbook is an example for that model, not a driving procedure for every Jaguar.
Use Jaguar's owner information to find the instructions for your exact vehicle. Do not assume advice for a diesel XF applies to a petrol F-Type, or that two cars displaying similar wording need the same repair.
Can you keep driving?
Do not take the warning itself as permission to finish the journey. If it appears while driving, find a safe place to stop and check the vehicle-specific instructions. Get assistance if the car is behaving abnormally or you are unsure whether it is safe to continue.
Avoid a motorway run to try to clear it, and do not repeatedly restart the car to see whether the message disappears. A message that goes away does not establish that the underlying problem has been repaired. You do not need to reproduce the fault for a buyer or drive the car to us.
Record what happened while it is fresh
Once safely parked, write down the sequence. Useful details for the garage and a valuation include:
- The exact dashboard wording and any other warning lights.
- Whether the warning appeared at start-up or during a journey.
- Whether the car lost power, ran roughly or stopped moving.
- Whether this is the first occurrence or a returning problem.
- Recent repairs and any diagnostic reports already supplied.
Photographs of the dashboard help. A short factual description is more useful than naming a suspected part from an online discussion. If no cause has been diagnosed, simply say so.
Ask for evidence before agreeing to replacement parts
Request a written explanation of the findings, alongside the quote. Ask what testing supports the proposed repair, whether further investigation is needed and what happens if the symptom remains afterwards.
Check whether the price includes diagnosis, parts, labour, VAT and any further checks after repair. Where investigation is open-ended, agree a spending limit and ask the garage to contact you before proceeding beyond it.
If a specific exhaust-filter problem has been confirmed, our Jaguar DPF warning guide covers that decision in more detail. If the diagnosis concerns the transmission, read the gearbox fault guide. Those are separate repair decisions; the restricted-performance message does not select one for you.
If turbo replacement has been proposed for an XF, our turbo replacement cost guide explains the difference between a parts price and a complete repair quote.
Compare the next bill with your plans for the car
A defined repair on a Jaguar you want to keep may be sensible. Consider its overall condition, upcoming maintenance and how confident the garage is in the diagnosis. Before commissioning work, check any existing warranty or repair cover and its approval requirements. If you plan to sell after repair, compare the likely extra sale proceeds with the full cost and time involved.
Money already spent can make the next decision feel harder, but the useful question is what another payment will achieve. A current offer for the car as it stands gives you something concrete to compare with the repair quote.
For a free, no-obligation valuation, send the reg, mileage, postcode and warning details. We buy faulty Jaguars, including the XF, with or without a confirmed diagnosis. If you accept, we arrange free mainland UK collection and secure bank-transfer payment on collection day.
